Review Himmarshee Bar and Grille

Saturday, October 10, 2009

Tonight was a continued dinner birthday celebration with family. The Himmarshee Bar & Grille in downtown Ft. Lauderdale came recommended and the evening was perfect for the 30 minute drive from downtown Miami.

The restaurant is located in a revitalized area near the Broward Theater of Performing Arts. Himmarshee is a hot spot for post-theater goers, after-work power elites, and locals looking for great food.

Chicken, mushroom and brie soup

My uncle ordered a soup for appetizer. His first taste lit his sleepy eyes after a hard day's work. He said it was the best soup in a restaurant he has enjoyed in a long time. This is high praise from a native of Ecuador where eating home-made soup daily is a tradition he has followed for over 60 years. My uncle exclaimed that the creaminess, texture and taste was a utopian blend. Surprisingly it was not salty. My mother and I tasted a sample and our taste buds were tantalized. High marks for the soup!

Gorgonzola Stuffed Dates

Another appetizer leapt from the menu page and I was confident it would meet my expectations. The warm, stuffed dates with gorgonzola cheese and bits of bacon and a sweet, vinaigrette exceeded expectations! I was inlove!

Grilled Pork Chop with bliss potatoes and herticot vert (French green beans)

Braised Short Rib with Mac-n-Cheese

The braised short rib literally fell apart from the bone and melted like butter in your mouth. The savory accompaniment of a macaroni and white cheese with ham was a perfect choice side for the succulent rib. However, the law of diminishing return took effect with every bite from the saltiness which may be attributed to the cheese or ham or both. Nonetheless I still enjoyed it.

One pet peeve that I have repeatedly come across in reviewing restaurants-- the online menu is outdated! Originally I intended to order the Roasted Half Duckling. The "vanilla sweet potato puree" struck a chord for my yearning autumn flavors and countdown to Thanksgiving. I simply love sweet potato! Unfortunately the duck was not on the current menu tonight. Restaurants need to be aware that often customers will make a decision on restaurant selection based on the online menu.

For a Saturday evening, the restaurant was buzzing with gaiety and customers continued to trickle in. We arrived at 8:15pm and there were plenty of seats for this narrow restaurant--the new trend in restaurant size and seating floor plans. Service was good.

Overall the experience was salivating which signals my future return. Unfortunately, there was no room left for dessert which only means I will have to return sooner than later.
